Private Couples Retreats Are Moving Beyond Spa Weekends And Set Itineraries

WILDERNESS, SOUTH AFRICA, August 2026, Romantic travel has long relied on a familiar formula: a luxury room, dinner for two, a spa treatment and perhaps a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival. But as travellers look for more privacy, shared experiences and time away from everyday routine, some couples are beginning to expect more than a conventional romantic weekend.

That shift sits behind Wilderness Together, a new five-night private couples retreat introduced by Consensuality in Wilderness on South Africa’s Garden Route. Rather than building the stay around a packed activity schedule or facilitated relationship programme, the retreat combines private accommodation, curated regional experiences and significant stretches of time intentionally left open. Only one couple is hosted at a time, making privacy part of the operating model rather than simply another accommodation feature. The retreat is based at Mandalay Farm in Hoekwil, near Wilderness, where guests have exclusive use of an adults-only cabin and all meals are prepared for them by a private chef.

The itinerary then extends into the wider Garden Route. Included experiences range from a private game drive near George, microlight flights along the coastline to a sunset cruise on Knysna Lagoon and a gourmet beach picnic. An in-cabin couples massage and self-guided cacao ritual are also included, while kayaks and paddleboards are available for couples wanting to spend time on the water independently.

For the tourism industry, the format reflects a broader opportunity to rethink what makes a premium couples escape valuable. Instead of adding more activities to justify a longer stay, Wilderness, Together deliberately keeps the programme light, with most days centred around one principal experience and the remaining hours left to the couple.

This approach challenges the assumption that higher-value travel products need increasingly dense itineraries. For travellers already managing busy work and home lives, having less to organise and fewer scheduled commitments can itself become part of the value proposition. Consensuality founder Carol Momberg describes the thinking behind the retreat as creating the conditions for couples to rediscover some of the energy that everyday routine can gradually replace. “You just need to want to feel that pull again,” she says.

Importantly, the retreat is not positioned as couples therapy or a facilitated relationship programme. There are no compulsory workshops, group discussions or scheduled coaching sessions. Couples can instead decide how much or how little they want to engage with self-guided activities provided inside the cabin.

These include conversation prompts, love-letter stationery, role-play cards, body-painting materials, a private workbook and an erotic treasure hunt. The cabin itself also includes a wood-fired outdoor hot tub, spa bath, mirrored four-poster bed and private adults-only playroom, allowing the more intimate side of the retreat to remain entirely private and self-directed. The concept also shows how a single accommodation business can use its surrounding destination as part of the core product rather than treating nearby attractions as optional extras. Wilderness provides the base, while George, Knysna and the Garden Route coastline become part of the wider experience.

For regional tourism suppliers, that creates a visitor journey linking accommodation, private dining, wildlife experiences, aviation, boating and other local operators within one coordinated stay. It is a model that can be particularly relevant for smaller tourism businesses, where collaboration across complementary experiences can create a stronger multi-night proposition than any one supplier could provide independently.

The retreat can be extended from five to seven nights, while additional options include a private photography experience with a keepsake coffee-table book and the possibility of combining the Garden Route stay with time in the Cape Winelands.

Wilderness, Together ultimately occupies a space between a conventional romantic getaway and a structured couples retreat. That balance is also what makes the launch relevant beyond the couples market itself. As travellers increasingly look for experiences shaped around a specific purpose, tourism businesses have an opportunity to move beyond simply selling rooms or activities and instead build products around why guests are travelling in the first place.

Couples interested in the retreat can submit their preferred travel period and stay length through the Wilderness Together retreat page.
